Weather and Climate

Weather is what nature is doing now. When we talk about the weather, we are talking about what is happening now or what will happen soon. It is sunny or cloudy. It is hot or cold. It is windy or calm.

Climate is how weather acts over many years. Is it hotter this summer that last? What was the rainiest year? Does Nebraska get more snow than Kansas? Both weather and climate are important because they change what we can do.

Right now, people are worried about how humans are changing the world climate. They want to know if pollution is making the world warmer. If the world becomes a lot warmer, glaciers could melt. The sea levels could rise. There could be very dry weather or droughts.

Just remember:

  • All parts of the world do not change in the same way.
  • Some change occurs naturally.
  • Changes in other parts of the world can change the weather here.
