Guidelines for Presenters

If you are currently enrolled in HORT 590, you should see Diana McElwain in Throckmorton 1028 between Aug. 23 and Oct. 8, 2004 to schedule a time to give your internship report.  Slots are available on a first come, first-served basis, so signing up early will help ensure that you present your oral report at a time most convenient for you.  Your adviser is the person who will assign your HORT 590 grade, so it is important to coordinate your oral and written reports through him or her.

Most oral reports will be given to students taking HORT 190 Pre-Internship in Horticulture, which is held from 4:30 to 5:20 on Mondays.  Internship reports will be given from October 25 through November 29.  Each presenter will have 12 minutes to give their presentation and a 3 minute question and answer period.  Your equipment should be set up before the class period begins.  If you go over your time limit, you will be stopped, and that will be reflected in your grade.

It is important that you let HORT 190 instructors Williams (Track 1) or Keeley (Track 2) know what audio-visual equipment that you plan to use so that it can be set up before the class period.  In particular, if you will be presenting a digital presentation, you should plan to have your presentation loaded onto the computer well BEFORE the class period (again, see Williams - 2746 Throckmorton - if you are presenting in Track 1 and Keeley - 3607 Throckmorton - if you are presenting in Track 2).  Make sure that you are using a medium (CD, 100 or 250 zip disk, or jump drive with USB port) that can be loaded onto the laptop!

Digital presentations should be of a manageable file size.  If you fail to save photos as j-pegs (.jpg file extension) before saving them in presentation software like PowerPoint, your presentation file will be very large, and thus very slow.  Microsoft PowerPoint and Corel Presentations are available for you to use.

Focus the presentation on what you consider to be the most important experiences from your internship.  Do not attempt to cover everything that is in your written report.  You are expected to give a sharp presentation!  Act as though you are presenting to a prospective employer or in a professional situation.  Apply what you have learned in your Public Speaking class(es).  Dress in a professional manner (e.g. no hats, no jeans).

We are looking forward to hearing about your experiences this summer!

You should turn in your written internship report to your adviser before you give your oral internship presentation.

By the way, if you complete the 1-credit HORT 190 course, you can enroll in one less credit when you sign up for your internship (i.e., instead of enrolling for 3 or 6 HORT 590 credits, only pay for 2 or 5 HORT 590 credits).  The 1-credit Pre-Internship in Horticulture course counts for one of your internship credits.  As of Fall 2002, all Horticulture students are required to take HORT 190; but students majoring in Horticultural Therapy are not required to take this class.
