Internships in Tree Propagation Research

Positions Available: Student Interns to assist with vegetative propagation research Programs.  Full-time positions begin June 2003 and end Dec. 2003 (flexible date).

Scope: Interns will assist a core group of research personnel with projects that investigate the rooting of loblolly pine, eastern cottonwood and American sycamore as stem cuttings or tissue cultured shots.  This group also is selecting clones for superior growth and interacting with projects that conduct somatic embryogenesis, molecular and transgenic research.  Each intern will focus on either pine or hardwood species.  In addition to propagations, the interns' duties will encompass most horticulture aspects of greenhouse and container nursery operation (sowing seed, transplanting, mixing media, watering, spraying pesticides, fertilizing, pruning, and maintaining greenhouses), and many facets of agricultural research that apply to plantation forestry and fiber farming.

Qualifications: Junior-level standing or higher, strong academic achievement in horticulture, forestry, plant science, or a closely related major.

The Bio-technician/Burn Crew Member will participate on prescribed burn crews and assist with preserve maintenance activities including fence repair, tree removal, weed control, and prairie seedling care.  Public relations work, including leading tours and giving programs may also be required.  The Bio-technician will need to work closely with Conservancy staff, cooperating scientists and graduate students. This short-term (full-time) position will require irregular hours and will include extensive outdoor physical labor under adverse conditions.  The Bio-technician is supervised by the Platte/Rainwater Basin Land Steward, does not supervise other staff, but may supervise volunteers.  This position will run from March 3 - May 9, 2003, with a possible 6 month extension, in a rural part of central Nebraska.  Housing will be provided.

Duties: Assist with prescribed fire activities, including fireline construction, preparation, and implementation of prescribed burns, and mop-up work.

Assist with preserve maintenance and monitoring duties such as fence repair, weed control (including herbicide application), livestock handling, woody plant control (chain-saw work), and lease compliance.

Assist with the management of a prairie seed production nursery, including seed and seedling preparation, planting, and monitoring.

Positions focus on research with horticultural plant propagation technologies and applying those technologies to find superior trees for use in forestry. Interns will assist a core group of five research personnel with projects that investigate the rooting of loblolly pine, American sweetgum, and eastern cottonwood as stem
cuttings and microshoots. This group also is selecting clones for superior growth and interacting with projects that conduct genetic transformations and search for DNA markers. Each intern will focus on either pine or hardwood species. In addition to propagation, the interns duties will encompass most aspects of 
greenhouse and container nursery operation (sowing seed, transplanting, mixing media, watering, straying pesticides, fertilizing, and maintaining greenhouses) and many facests of agricultural research (installing experiments and collecting, processing & analyzing data).
